Homestead Exemption
What is a Homestead Exemption?
A Homestead Exemption is a property tax reduction program that allows homeowners to reduce the taxable value of their primary residence. This can result in lower property taxes for the homeowner.
REQUIREMENTS
The requirements for a Homestead Exemption in Metro Atlanta vary depending on the specific county, but generally, the homeowner must meet the following criteria:
The property must be the homeowner's primary residence.
The homeowner must be a legal resident of the state of Georgia.
The homeowner must have owned the property as of January 1 of the current year. If you buy your home with a possession date after April 1st, the homestead exemption will start the following year, but you must apply before April 1st of the year following closing.

IMPORTANT NOTES
You cannot have the homestead exemption on more than one property.
Your exemption will be automatically renewed each following year as long as you continue to occupy the home under the same ownership.
Electronically Recorded Deeds: Some counties in Georgia now accept deed recordings electronically. If your deed is recorded electronically, you will receive a copy of the recorded deed via email instead of the original deed.
