Mozley Park
Mozley Park is a charming early 20th-century residential neighborhood located just three miles west of downtown Atlanta. This community was established over a 20-year period, beginning around 1920, and features Folk Victorian cottages and Craftsman bungalows built on small lots with varied setbacks and no driveways. The neighborhood plan is that of a gridiron, typical of many Atlanta neighborhoods, and many of the streets have retained their original granite curbing and narrow sidewalks with hexagonal pavers. In this district, you'll find the beautiful Mozley Park and C.A. Scott Recreation Center, where you'll find a swimming pool, dog park, outdoor fitness zone, BBQ pavilions, all inside the beautifully landscaped park.
Past
Mozley Park has a rich history and played a significant role in Atlanta's history of racial segregation. Mozley Park was an early epicenter of white flight in Atlanta, which had de facto residential segregation.
In the 1940s, many white sections of nearby Ashby Street transitioned to black, causing mass selling by white homeowners. This led to the establishment of the Mozley Park Home Owners' Protective Association (MPHOPA) in 1949, which attempted to halt black expansion.
By 1950, black Realtists (real estate agents) refused to cooperate any longer with MPHOPA efforts and started advertising a mass listing of Mozley Park homes in the black newspaper, the Atlanta Daily World.
By 1954, the racial transition of the neighborhood was virtually complete.
Present
Today, Mozley Park is a vibrant neighborhood with easy access to several public project developments, including the Westside Trail that runs along its eastern border, connecting it to nearby Washington Park and Gordon White Park.
Although some older houses and streets have been demolished due to the construction of Interstate 20, Mozley Park has maintained its integrity as an early 20th-century residential community. The neighborhood's present state is a beautiful and diverse community with a rich history that has overcome significant challenges.
Future
Mozley Park is poised for continued development and growth as it remains a sought-after neighborhood for families and individuals looking for a welcoming and historic community to call home.
